Make Your Community a Better Place to Live, Work and Play

eTownz creates digital tools for stakeholders in Irish communities to work together and implement change, promoting local development. But they left UX/UI aside for a long time and they ended up producing an arcane, uncomely hotchpotch.

As UX/UI Designer consultant, I guided the development team through an overhaul to make the interface principle-compliant so that it feels trustworthy and straightforward.

Problem

eTownz digital tools were built without consideration for UX/UI and, as the tools grew in complexity, the team lost perspective of how difficult it had become to understand the system as a first-time user. They started to worry when they realised how many hours would be lost in training and support as more and more stakeholders started showing interest for the tools. As a small team, it felt crucial to seal that sinkhole before it was too late.

UX was inconsistent, inefficient, and inaccessible.

Analysis

The stylesheet had to be updated with unified elements and colour variables

I and the development team explored several pages, taking note of any inconsistent or hardcoded elements, confusing interactions, and unclear writing. We agreed on a set of universal parameters to homogenize the styling system, and we planned to deliver the notes to another external developer fully focused on updating the code to the new standard.
